Since our inception in 1995, we have combined a strong core faculty, dedicated community preceptors, an innovative curriculum and award-winning medical centers to create an environment where our residents can develop the skills they need to be outstanding family physicians and leaders. Our first-time board pass rate remains 100% since the inception of the program.
At the Sutter Family Medicine Residency Program, we are proud to offer our residents comprehensive training in a supportive environment so that our graduates leave us feeling confident and competent to provide a full spectrum of care to their chosen communities. A typical day in our residents’ continuity clinic involves skin procedures, managing diabetes, inserting an IUD, providing prenatal care, performing a musculoskeletal injection, doing a geriatrics visit and finishing with a well-child check. We offer full reproductive health including abortion training and comprehensive obstetrical training with our c-section privileged faculty. Our continuity Family Medicine practices are truly “one stop shops” that serve diverse patient populations throughout the greater Sacramento region.
Family Medicine is well respected within Sutter Health and Sutter Medical Group. Our graduates and faculty have held numerous leadership positions including Chief of Staff, Chair of Sutter Medical Group Board of Directors, Division Vice Presidents, Chair of Family Medicine, Wellness Champions and others. Our own immediate past Program Director, Dr. Dineen Greer, is now the Vice President for Graduate Medical Education, overseeing all residencies within Sutter Health’s wide footprint while still teaching our residents as adjunct faculty.
Over the last 25+ years, we have developed a culture of collaboration nurtured by our focus on patient, staff, and physician wellness with protected time for didactics, resident support groups, team building, out-of-town retreats and more. In addition, we have a full-time behavioral scientist core faculty member dedicated to ensuring the health and wellness of our residency program as well as integrated behavioral health services for our patients in our Sacramento continuity clinic. We embrace diversity as a strength. Conveniently located in our state’s capital, we also advocate for our patients, for our communities, and for our profession. Please see our Advocacy section under Educational Highlights for the many recent developments here.
Of 160+ graduates—most of whom serve in Northern California in every type of practice from full spectrum Family Medicine with obstetrics to public health administration—all report that their training prepared them well for what came next. Our residents have a significant voice in fulfilling their educational goals, and our culture of collaboration, friendliness, and respect make us the ideal Family Medicine home for you. Whether your special interest is rural healthcare or procedures or healthcare policy, our well-rounded program will help you reach your goals.
So, come plan your adventure with us!
