The focus of the year is to introduce the resident to emergency medicine and have them become efficient at collecting history and physical information on patients, following through with the process of forming a differential, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, learning medical management and learning to make appropriate and safe dispositions. During this year the resident will perform key procedures with sufficient numbers to become competent. The resident will learn to care for critically ill patients while also spending time with a number of other specialties to obtain in-depth knowledge of pathophysiology and treatment.

• Trauma Orthopedics – 4 weeks
• Pediatric Emergency Medicine – 4 weeks
• Trauma – 4 weeks

The second year will focus on the previous goals but the resident will become more efficient and independent at seeing more and complex patients and learn to diagnose those patients with complex or atypical presentations or with multiple co-morbidities. The resident may begin to supervise medical students and PGY1 residents. This year more time will be spent learning about the resuscitation of infants and children with rotations at Sutter Sacramento.*

The third year focuses on learning to manage multiple critical patients and the flow of the department with faculty supervision. The resident is given graduated responsibility and now leads a team and supervises junior residents and medical students in preparation for independent practice upon graduation.
